Joy didn't take long, and the food still smelled hot, and the hot chocolate's scent (mixed with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves) wafted over, making her mouth water. "I'm so hungry," she said out loud, surprised, and when Joy gave her and Ward their gyros she tore into hers immediately.

He hadn't been expecting a gyro of his own. He had no money to pay for it with. He hesitated.

But then he thought maybe he understood. He reached over gently touching the back of Joy's hand. "You want..." he licked his lips in a subtle but unmistakable way.

It wouldn't be the first time trading himself for food. This he knew how to do.

"No, I have my own, it's okay. Tell me if you like the hot chocolate, I can set up a tab for you," she said easily, deliberately misunderstanding.

"Also you look terrible right now," Raspberry teased.

He laughed at Raspberry's comment. He knew he looked terrible, but his face wouldn't be where anyone would see it anyway. It was his tongue he was offering. it really wasn't as terrible when it wasn't forced.

Did Joy want to start keeping track of things he accepted from her so he could pay her back later? Or would she want him to do things for other people and just get the money from it?

He took a sip of the hot chocolate. "Its good," he said hesitantly.

"She's not going to have sex with you, you're her patient," Raspberry murmured to Ward, too quiet for Joy to hear. "She doesn't do that. She just wants to be able to know that you have good, hot food when you want it."

"Im not her patient any more. And thats not how the world works. There's no such thing as something for nothing."

"I was raised to treat guests well, including making sure guests always had food and drink," Joy said, sipping at her own hot chocolate. "It would make me feel embarrassed and awful if I didn't feed you too, Ward."

"I would feel better if there were at least something I could give you in return," he said quietly.

Joy thought about it. "Can you tell me which programs work best for you, if any of the soup kitchens or food pantries are safe?"

"Do you have a list you want me to scope out, anything, in particular, you want noticed?" he asked enthusiastically.

"Mission hope is the one I usually go to," he explained.

"I know of five different ones I don't have any good feedback on," Joy said, and told him about them, where they operated, and what kinds of foods they should have. One was kosher, one was vegan, and one specialized in no allergens, including gluten. The other two were simply supposed to focus on good, filling foods, rich with vegetables and fruits in the summer and full of comfort food in the winter, as well as giving away nonperishables for people to take with them. "It would be helpful to me if you could go there and tell me later what food they had, how they treated you, if people avoid them. I don't want to give money or volunteer hours or recommend bad places," she explained.

He agreed readily, glad to have some work he could do in return for the help she offered him.

And it would be helpful as well to scope out the other charity kitchens, get a better idea of the dealers and gangs that frequented each one.

"Do you know if any are especially dangerous for pets?" he asked, knowing from experience already that people just seemed to automatically assume that's what he was.

"Two churches--the one on -- Street and the Narco Mission, those tend to be deeply unhelpful. The first one tries to 'reunite' pets with their 'owners', and the second, I know, refuses to give help without incredibly aggressive proselytizing," Joy said darkly. "The shelter on -- Street calls the police on pets, and the one in Manhattan proper on -- Avenue is deeply toxic and coercive. I would avoid those."

"I could go to those and scope them out as well, I could let you know more about what goes on there."

"I don't want you to get hurt. If they call the cops on you--" Joy started.

He scoffed. "I'd escape. Its not like they can stop me with an implant or shock collar here. I'll be fine."

"If you do get picked up, call me immediately," Joy told him seriously. "Tell me where you are and we'll come with an advocate."

He grinned, taking that as encouragement. "I won't get caught," he assured her, finally feeling like he had some kind of purpose here, like the underground network he worked for in his world.

Raspberry groaned out loud. "Now you've jinxed it!" she said, one hand palming her face.

He snorted, "Jinxing isnt even a real thing," he chided Raspberry. "It's luck, and skill. Sure, my luck sucks, but I do have skill." he bragged, pleased with himself. "Anyway, it will be fun. ANd I'll have some interesting stories to tell you next time I come around."
