Matt smiled at him, can hear that. But jealousy not facts. Not rational. Needs to be kissed away sometimes. Or fucked away, he said softly, arranging some of the cookies Danny had gotten out, what happened after said could stop helping other pets?

"I won't be mean," Foggy promised, "I will be careful and only assume all good faith, okay? I will listen to you and not make any assumptions, how about that?"

"Uh...that was when he started getting upset, and shouting about not being good enough."

"Mmm-hmm." He hummed a bit skeptically, but he went to wash his face, and change into some of Honey's clothes, silk dhoti pants and the tunic Toffee had worked together with him to make.

Other things happened recently? Matt asked shrewdly. Have stopped kissing, Colleen been around too much? Toffee got close to you? Other people think you are buying a new pet?

While he was getting freshened up, Foggy was inspected by the cat. "Hello," he greeted her, and offered his fist. She was loud and large, but also seemed to like him, even jumping onto his shoulders to lick his hair.

"We've been kissing plenty. And Colleen isn't around alone, always with other Defenders, or I go to help teach at her dojo. Uh...didn't think Toffee was getting really close to me. And no one's said anything about me getting a new pet to me." But...maybe they had around Matt.

And when he came back out Onigiri had climbed the other Foggy and started grooming him.

Matt thought carefully about how to say next what he meant, and said softly, could someone be telling him that you are planning to get second? Or that you are lonely because he can't give you all you need? He asked, using more careful words, and explained softly, sometimes hearing about how other people need more to make them happy, or people saying a pet is not enough, can be bad. Once had a very bad week, lots of pain, uselessness. I thought Foggy didn't deserve to have to deal with my brokenness. Has similar happened here?

"Hey," Foggy said softly. "Do you feel up to telling me what's going on now?"

"Maybe people could be saying that, but I'm not lonely. Not ever fair to expect one person to be all anyone needs." Danny frowned. "He has been busy recently."

"Was a bad week, so happy to get to have Danny to myself again, and picked up more of what I was doing, but maybe pushed too hard."

Busy how? With charity work? Matt asked curiously, Or with being sad and sick and lonely?

Foggy nodded carefully. "Can I ask how your week was bad? Did something happen or someone say something, or was it just a lot of strings of bad luck?" He noted the way Treacle was curling in on himself on the couch he'd sat down on, biting his mouth and cuddling the cat to his chest.

"With the charity work, yes. He had to spend a lot of time with Toffee while he was with us, so he couldn't do everything he'd been doing, and so this week he went to meetings and did stuff everyday." He didn't want to go into too much detail.

"Some comments about how I'd probably 'flake out' again, like they thought Toffee didn't need or deserve to be taken care of. Had to cut back on my other charity work when we had him, so trying to make up for it."

How did they feel about him not being able to do normal work, and only help Toffee? Matt asked seriously, people angry? Sometimes others resent me at work if I can't come often.

"So then you felt bad emotionally," Foggy said carefully. "Did Danny know people were saying you were flaky and uncommitted?"

"The people running the groups knew why he was cutting back, and it's not like he didn't follow through on his commitments, he just didn't make as many as he usually did. You think that people might be judging him by the standards of the employees, instead of like the other volunteers?"

"Noo...no one said it to my face. And I did do everything I said I'd do, even with Toffee there." He added, feeling a bit insulted.

People frequently do, Matt said simply, especially if they think he cares more about one Toffee than about everyone else. And volunteers get taken for granted lots. And taking less time because cannot do everything is looked down on. Even things like seizures can be called 'flaky' or 'not committed enough'.

"Of course," Foggy said quickly. "You're not the kind of person who would drop things unless you absolutely had to. But you could hear them saying it behind your back?"

"And his hearing's always better than most people's, not like how I have to consciously enhance mine." Danny added with a sinking feeling. "The group who organised Toffee were feeling me out to see whether I wanted to pull us from the list, or stay on to be asked after we've had however much of a break we need."

"Uh-huh. And then Danny asked me if I wanted us taken off the list for helping more pets like Toffee!" It was still upsetting, remembering being told he wasn't good enoguh to help another pet.

So they think that you both can't handle it? Or that you are using it to get more pets in the future? Matt asked shrewdly. People say stuff, see things not there. Used to think Foggy and me only did advocacy work so he'd get more pets.

"So he jumped to thinking that you didn't want to or couldn't do it ever again?" Foggy asked carefully. "Or did he just want to know how you felt?"

"Doesn't work that way. If we take on a pet through there we're not allowed to keep them." Not that he'd want to. "I got the impression that it as a standard check in question. But you think Matty might have jumped to it being a suggestion that he couldn't handle it again?"

"Don't know. Was just too angry at the idea I couldn't do it again."

That's what it sounds like to me, Matt said with a bitter shrug, like saying, oh, you cannot possibly do it again, we're asking to be perfunctory. Stings deep.

"Well, that sounds pretty upsetting," Foggy said. "I mean, I know Matt and you're quite literally just like him, and he doesn't quit doing things just because he had to rearrange his schedule a little. And you said you didn't have to drop any pre-existing commitments, right?"

"And I jumped to thinking he was worried about me wanting someone else or something."

"No, and I was picking up more of the volunteer work as Toffee got better. Like once he didn't need a chaperone for meetings with DA Barba and his household."

What did you start saying when he got really upset? Matt asked carefully. Did you try hugging?

"So in other words," Foggy said, "You've been doing a perfectly appropriate amount of work, but people think you magically should do even more? Is this a paid position? What are, um, your defined actual job functions?"

"He pulled away the first time, then I was upset and didn't want to risk hurting him with leaking chi."

"Not paid, no. Work with a bunch of charities, and it's not all defined. Do a lot of the fundraising and awareness raising stuff."

Matt winced a little, and said, you stopped hugging him? I don't see what else you could have done but ouch.

"So are people are treating you like someone who does everything because they don't have anything else to do?" Foggy asked, and clarified, "It's just that sometimes people think of volunteers as having no other obligations and as not doing enough."

"Just got worse from there. Him pulling away made me too upset to risk hurting him by hugging him with my chi leaking, that made him more upset, and made me more upset and my chi worse."

Matt winced harder and nodded, like when I get upset and angry and Foggy gets angry back, both get more upset until total snap. Very unpleasant, he said softly, and then risked a gentle arm-pat. Not your fault, though. Sometimes bad happens. Me and Jessica can't always be around when scared upset angry.

"Absolutely," Foggy said. He softened his voice. "So, to make sure I understand you correctly-- you want to keep helping other pets, both in the charity work and in the more close-up way? Do you think there's anything that would make that more doable for you?"

"I need to learn to control my chi when I'm upset better." He was calm enough to have it under control now. "Jessica can be scary when she's mad, even if it's not aimed at you."

"Do want to keep helping. But...need to tell them that I don't have to make up for anything. And need to tell Danny that I do want to keep helping. Just not straight away. Uh...not sure about how to make the charity work easier."

And when I get very scared it freaks her out too, Matt admitted softly, especially 'fawning' things. She is not good at being especially gentle when reminded of bad people.

Foggy listened between the lines. "Would it be helpful if you had a defined list of things that were actually your job, when volunteering?" he asked softly. "Or if you had a list of what you have done, to remind yourself and others?"

Or gets very angry when I am sad, and is not always helping, Matt said ruefully. Felt very bad about how she held onto me, and squeezed me too tight. But we talked, and fixed things. Understand that I want to support too.
