Matt made a slightly outraged noise, and Danny wrapped a warm shawl over his shoulders.

"It's okay, I'm yours and you're mine, and I'm not going to touch him. You're the only pet here who matters to me."

Matt snarled back at Treacle, and Foggy frowned. "Hey," he said. "It's fine. We can all respect each other's boundaries. And besides, you are definitely the best pet here," he said, teasing a little even as Matt preened.

"He's the best for you, my Matt is the best for me." But he focused his attention back on Matt, feeding him a pierogie dipped in sour cream.

"He's definitely priceless," Foggy said, kissing the top of his head until Matt actually smiled. And then he reached for the next buttery pierogie, dipping it in the applesauce. As they ate, he noticed a weird vibe between the Matts--almost competitive? They sounded like they were each trying to be more graceful and beautiful and petlike than the other.

Golubushka was trying to steal Danny! And Matt set himself to making sure that Danny could see how much better he was than the other him.

Foggy raised an eyebrow at Matt, squinting at him, and he realized that the faint trembling in Matt's back meant that Matt was also feeling jealous and insecure, his mouth set in the cold face he used when he was shredding a prosecution's case or deposing a hostile witness. He glanced at Danny, and then at each of them, tilting his head a little, as if to say, you see this bullshit? And then he cleared his throat a little, and said gently, "Hey, Danny, if you had to say, don't you think they it's interesting how different they look from each other now? Before they were wearing almost the same clothes, but now I think they're very much separate."

Danny: Clearing Up

"Yes, they're very different." He cast a quick assessing glance at Golubushka. "My Matt has more muscle, lovely sleek and compact."

"And Matt has more personality, and his hair is silky soft and smooth," Foggy stroked the crown braid it was in. "His hands are perfect," and Foggy kissed the calloused fingers, Matt shivering with desire now.

"My Matt is so thoughtful, so good at recognising the value of other people's perspectives and he works to try to accommodate how other people view the world."

Foggy felt anger deep in his stomach but kept it tempered. "Matt fights for justice, people who would have no recourse, people who are discarded by society. I've seen him made ADAs cry and when people hear he's on the case they start offering to settle immediately. And without him we wouldn't be half the force for change we are in the Kitchen--it's because of his work that we're getting closer and closer to no new pets within our lifetimes."

Danny: Clearing Up

"That would be good." He agreed mildly. "Feral says it would be a form of soft genocide if there were no new pets, but that he wouldn't have a problem with pets dying out that way." Just with the way the abolitionists wanted to have them all put down.

Foggy opened his mouth to reply, not sure what he would say, and then stopped, looking around, and both Matts had gone from tentatively happy to looking almost sick with what he recognized as grief--guilt and horror and fear and disbelief on their faces, terrible memories probably playing at full volume. "I think we need to table that discussion," he said, and sat down gently on the floor, pulling Matt into a hug, letting him hold on tight, breathing so fast he was worried he'd faint.

"You're right." He moved to the floor himself, pulling Matt into a hug. He'd heard Feral's opinion before, but this hadn't been the place for it.

"I'm so sorry sweetheart." And he tapped out a message on his back.

'I was too angry that Foggy was trying to turn it into a competition over you to think about how you'd react.'

Golubushka's Foggy: Clearing Up

Foggy focused on Matt, on holding him and murmuring to him that everything was okay, that everyone was safe and okay here, and he didn't have to work now, he had resting time, and eventually Matt was calmer, blowing his nose on the tissues Foggy passed him gently and letting Foggy wipe his face with the damp cloth and then the dry one. (Foggy had learned that Matt hated other people wiping or blowing his nose for him, which was fine.)

And then, to Foggy's surprise, he squirmed a little out of the grip and moved over to Treacle, tentatively offering his own hand to hug him, soft little sounds of regret and--affection? Coming from his mouth. Foggy felt faintly bewildered.

He hugged Golubushka, nuzzling him and making his own reassuring and forgiving noises in return.

Matt nuzzled him and kissed his neck, and they held each other for a few minutes and then Matt sat back, turning his head towards Foggy and making the face that he called 'sad eyes filled with longing' until Foggy came back over to pet him gently and say he was sorry he'd made things so tense, he really had not meant to at all, and he apologized to Treacle for not being fair to him either.

He made an accepting noise and nuzzled the Foggy's hand briefly, then leaned into Danny again.

Matt made a little grumble at Foggy, pushing at him for a second until he was pet the precise way he wanted, and before he knew it they were all moving towards the food again, but with both Danny and Foggy sitting on the same couch and Treacle was twining himself with him, and Matt sighed happily at the warm comfort, rubbing his fuzzy sweater on Treacle's cheeks and neck.

And he purred at the feel of twining with a fellow pet, someone who understood him and his assumptions on a bone deep level, that he didn't have with the pets in his new world.

Matt nuzzled into Treacle's side and then opened his mouth obediently for a bite of cheddar cheese on a little cracker, licking Foggy's fingers. His mind felt fuzzy around the edges, words far away from him; he felt only a burgeoning affection and a feeling of gratefulness for Treacle being here, being willing to accept and forgive him, and a kind of incredible warmth and desire towards Foggy. He briefly nuzzled at Danny's knee and then flinched back when a hand came down towards him, not expecting it.

And when Golubushka flinched he adjusted course and scratched behind Matt's ears, not Golubushka's.

"I think my Matt missed this, being with a pet who shares his culture. Pet culture in my world's a bit different."

Golubushka's Foggy: Clearing Up

"Yeah?" Foggy asked softly. "Nobody likes this kind of thing, or acts like this?" he asked, petting Matt gently and smoothly, kissing his head and smiling when he purred. And then he offered his hand curled closed to Treacle, as if he were a cat himself.

Danny: Clearing Up

"Oh, there's people who like it of course." He agreed, smiling as Matt hesitated, then leaned into the petting. "But liking it and acting like this isn't the same as having the same background and culture. Like...well that thing where I take our Japanese business contacts out to get hugely drunk is an important part of doing business with them, but Ward really isn't comfortable with it."

Golubushka's Foggy: Clearing Up

"I can understand what you mean," Foggy said. "We have to extensively advertise that me and Matt are from Hell's Kitchen so people will feel comfortable talking to us, and Matt's the one who advocates for a lot of our pet clients, and helps me and Marci translate their words when he's not the one taking point. There's also times when our clients are having psychotic episodes or are not very good at talking or being verbal, or can't be, and Matt helps a lot there."

Matt was purring now, tilting his head up for being rubbed under the neck and jingling the bells, and Treacle was making little squeaking sounds whenever Danny got to a particular spot in his scratches.

"Do you have trouble buying them toys and collars, things they like? I have a lot of research into which ones are best," Foggy offered. "And I know what you mean, it can get pretty difficult, being very isolated from people who really understand you. Matt says having pet friends is very important."

Danny: Clearing Up

"Thankfully I've had a lot of good advice about what sort of toys and collars work best. Feral helped a lot with the sensory side of the collars, although of course I always make sure Matt has the last word on if they feel good. And the safety release is a must." He bent to kiss Matt on the forehead.
