Foggy smirks. “Stop. The evil twin defense? We’re really going with that?”

“What?”

“Oh, you know, like Star Trek’s mirror-mirror Kirk? He did it?” Foggy folds his arms over his chest and leans back in his chair.

“What do you mean evil? Well, aside from adding an apparently ugly sweatshirt that is not green to my wardrobe and impersonating me to my roommate...? Not bothering to say, ‘hi’ after disappearing for six months?” Matt shrugs and then notices belatedly that both Foggy’s heart-rate and breathing have been more elevated than usual.

“You don’t have to pull all this… It’s seriously not impressing me, dude.”

“Foggy, I’m not lying!” Matt throws up his hands palm up briefly, then takes a step forward.

“I thought we were supposed to be Maverick and Goose? No secrets?”

“This is me telling you the truth!”

“Why don’t you look me in the eye when you say that?”

“What?” Matt nits his brow and tilts his head to the side, listening for signs of Mike. “What’s going on, Fog?”

Foggy gets up from his chair and walks over to stand in front of Matt, peering at his face. “Take off your glasses.”

Matt doesn’t hesitate in reaching up and taking off his glasses. He continues to look somewhere off to the left of Foggy’s shoulder, eyes darting to no particular point, as he folds them and hangs them off the collar of his ugly, mustard colored sweatshirt.

Matt sighs. He hates that feeling when someone thinks you’re lying and really you’re just afraid they won’t believe you. Especially since it makes your body language look a bit like you’re lying. Fortunately, it happens to be really easy to vindicate himself on one front. “Do whatever it is you need to do. Get a flashlight if you like.” He shakes his head. “They’re totally non-responsive to light.”

Foggy lets out the breath he’s holding and backs up. “No, I’m sorry, buddy. It’s my bad.” He goes back to his chair and sits down. “Let’s just forget this whole confusing thing.”
