He frowned at the crowd he didn't recognise, wondering if one of the other residents was holding a party or something.

He stayed very close to Matt.
One of the people in the crowd was louder than the others, obviously already on her way to getting drunk. "How long are we going to wait around for Melissa to drag her but down here? I thought she said she was just going up to get her purse."
And then she eyed the pets that came down with their owner."Oh well, at least we can be entertained in the meantime."

"I don't share." He said firmly, stepping between his pets and the drunk woman.

He pressed even close beside Matt as the drunk woman laughed loudly.

"Im not asking to play with your toys, just a display maybe, I've heard how talented pets can be, don't you want to show them off?"

"Not today. Our Dove is very shy, and you're frightening him."

The woman's eyes lit up, "Another time then?" she asked suggestively. And the moved to step around the possessive owner to get a better look at the younger pet. He really did look uncomfortable, it was delightful. She could just imagine...

"No, not for someone who enjoys frightening him." And he made sure to stay between them, while Matt guided Dove away, out onto the street.

He took a deep breath, remembering he was with Matt. Wanting to be strong for him and show that he wasn't so weak.

He squeezed Matt's hand. "She had no power to hurt us, did she? Just a drunk person."

"No, she had no power to hurt us. But better to avoid the situation if we can." And the fact that even drunk she hadn't backed off when Foggy said Dove was frightened...

He nodded, glad they were able to avoid a confrontation. That it happened in the lobby of their own apartment building was disconcerting too, he would have to be more on guard and careful coming and going.

And he wasn't going to ask to put his scarf on. Nope. This wasn't going to dampen his enthusiasm for the evening and going out.

"Taxi for Foggy Nelson and pets?"

"We're the pets." Matt said, raising his voice as he turned slightly.

"Foggy, cab's here!"

He was relieved to be on their way and getting as far away from the drunk crowd as possible.

He stayed close to Matt, content to be led by him.

He let Matt and Dove get in first, then followed them, settling beside Dove, and giving the driver the address of the club they wanted.

Dove sighed, feeling good to be on their way.

"Thank you for being protective," he whispered to Foggy. "I know I'm always safe with you and Matt."

"Good. You always deserve to be protected." He sighed. "I hate that she's give you a reason to be wary in our own building."

He didn't understand why Foggy was upset. "It's a good reminder to be wary everywhere, isn't it?" he asked.

"Matt?" Foggy directed him to answer Dove.

"Almost no pet is as oblivious to risks as many free men are, but you're a lot more wary than many pets are already."

He snorted with humor, "I know I should be less so. I try to remind myself how different it is, but a part of me still reacts wrong."

"Clinging to me for security and comfort was exactly the right reaction." Matt reassured Dove.

But he didn't always have Matt or Foggy to cling to. "I need you, you take care of me, I depend on you," he recited softly, reaffirming his commitment to his protector.

At least as Shadow, under the protection of a mask and secret identity, he was able to act more independently.

But as Dove, he often just felt lost. He kissed his protector on the cheek, so grateful to be taken care of by him.

And Matt kissed Dove on the cheek in return.

"My treasure." He smiled fondly as he spoke.

He was quiet the rest of the way. And when the taxi stopped got out with Matt. He waited for Foggy.

"What does it look like?" he asked. It smelled great even from outside.

"It's a converted brownstone, the only thing that shows it's a club is the sign handing out by the door." Foggy gave Dove the basics before going into more detail.

That sounded interesting. And he stayed close to Matt, wanting to hear more.

"Inside it's decorated in 1920s style." Foggy explained as he paid their cover charge.

"And there used to be a speakeasy run out of the cellar during prohibition times." The attendant added.
