Ward heard it, taking Joy's notice as an instruction to sprint after him, it took a minute, but his superior speed and agility played to his favour and he tackled the man to the cement, rolling and wrestling to get him under his control.

Raspberry watched in horror, almost hyperventilating, but to her enormous relief once Ward got the man good and punched several times he stood up and the security guard then arrested the other man himself, and she shook violently, the adrenaline starting to wear off and she felt cold and shaky and horrible.

"Ward?" she called. "Please--I--please come here, I don't feel so good," and she desperately wanted confirmation that he was okay, he hadn't gotten hurt too, her mind conjuring hidden wounds, stabs, knives they might have had--

Once he knew the the security guard got the guy, he back off quickly, not wanting to be arrested himself.

He'd gotten hit badly near his eye when he tackled him, and it hurt, but it wasn't that bad. Not broken at least but his face felt numb and weird. Worst was his sunglasses were broken and he'd have to risk stealing a new pair.

Any other injuries he wasn't aware of yet.

"Are you hurt?" he asked urgently coming back to her but keeping a distance, afraid that Joy woudl case him away.

"Please come here, please, I need to see you," she said, feeling both humiliated and utterly terrified, needing to see for herself. "What's that--your face--" and her breath went faster, so much she felt like she couldn't talk, choking on pure panic, and she heard Joy tell Ward firmly to walk closer and hold her hand for a minute, and then Joy tell her calmly to try and breathe, okay, she knew this was awful and frightening but she and Ward and Joy were all safe now, they were okay, and she needed to breathe, but Raspberry felt like she absolutely could not, her heart so loud it was starting to drown out everything else.

He was clearly upsetting her and pulled his hand away. "Sorry, I should go," he said, retreating.

"Stay where you are," Joy snapped, a complete order in her voice, and Ward froze. "Thank you. She's having a panic attack, she doesn't need someone else vanishing. Ward, put a hand on her back, rub it gently between her shoulderblades. Raspberry, I want you to try and take deep breaths, and I want you to try and smell the leaves like you did earlier, how they smell, and think about how the trees sound." She shuddered, but her breaths stopped hyperventilating quite so bad, and some color began to return to her face slowly.

"Good, thank you. Ward, squeeze her hand slowly, okay? And Raspberry, match your breath to the squeezes, deep, slow, there we go," she coaxed gently.

He did what Nurse Joy ordered, feeling nervous and antsy the entire time. Joy was wrong, He was making things worse, and his skin crawled from the forced touching.

She felt hideously embarrassed, childish and stupid, but it helped, and she took deeper and deeper breaths and then squeezed Ward's hand back, and when she could talk, she said, slowly and stuttering, "Thank, thank you, Ward, I, I know you don't like, you don't touch. Thank you. I'm, my chest hurts. You don't have to touch me anymore, at, any at all, but can you--sit with me? So I can, I'll know you're not dead either?"

It wasn't that he didnt' like touching her... okay so he didn't, but not more than he didn't like touching anyone.

he snuggly tucked his arms in around his chest and scooted a safe distance away. "Better now? I won't- I wont go if you want me to stay, but I don't want my staying to hurt you."

And he felt itcy, wishing he had something on him to take the edge off.

"You're not, you aren't hurting me, you haven't hurt me," she said, taking deeper breaths, trying to feel less dizzy, "I just--I thought--I saw the knife, I thought you got stabbed, you didn't, did you?" she asked, and stared at the bruise on his face, "And what is--how did you get that?"

"No, the knife didn't touch me. I got hit though. Not a big deal, hardly hurts," he assured her. "How does it look?" he asked and poked at his face with his fingers. It did feel kind of puffy.

"Puffy and swollen," she said, taking breaths, and she reached and leaned over, wincing at the strain, but she got the cold bag of peas out of the cooler and wrapped them in a little towel and handed them over, "Here, these will help."

He snorted and pushed them back at her. "Don't waste food," he said softly. The worst was that his glasses were broken and she could obviously clearly see his face. He pulled up his hood to hide his face as much as possible and his eyes closed.

"I supposed they'll make you go back to the clinic now," he said sadly. He'd hoped they could have more time to visit.

"We'll just put those back in the cooler after you're iced," she protested. "They use them for cold things all the time." And she tuned and stared at Joy, lips wobbling.

Joy frowned, and then sighed. "No, we can go to--the gazebo, I suppose. It would be easier to stay safe there."

"And we can still eat food?" she asked quietly.

"Of course we can," Joy said gently. "We're not going to starve either of you. Come on, Ward, the gazebo is only just over there," but it was well hidden behind trees and rosebushes.

He automatically goes to pick up the cooler, placing the frozen peas inside until they settle again, so that joy can help Raspberry.

Joy smiled at him as she helped her up and over to the other place, getting her settled at the table. "Thank you, Ward," she said. "Can I quickly take a look at your eye, please? For my own satisfaction?"

He sighed but sat still, though tense, as she took a look. He kept a close ear on everything around him.

At least Raspberry seemed to be doing a bit better again.

She peered carefully, not touching him any more than she needed to and certainly not without warning, but then nodded slowly as she inspected him. "It looks swollen and painful, it's definitely a bone bruise, but I don't see anything cut or broken," she said. "Ice it for another ten minutes."

"Your glasses got broken," Raspberry said, sounding a little angry on his behalf. "Do you have more? We should get you more."

He pulled his hood a little lower to hide his eyes, not wanting to disturb her by his face. "I'll be able to find some somewhere." And it was fairly simple... he was really good at pickpocketing.

"Your eyes are fine," Raspberry told him and then sighed softly as Joy said she was going back to retrieve the food and drinks.

He shrugged and stayed close. "Are you sure you're okay?" he asked quietly. "I'll find you another day they let you out. Promise. One of my safe spots is about a block from the clinic so I'm never really all that far away."

"I will feel better if I don't let them ruin my whole day," she said very firmly. "They don't get to control my life like that."

He grinned. "Right, never let them control you." he agreed. "ALways find every little opportunity you can use to defy them and prove they don't have power over you."

"And always practice being brave," she agreed with him warmly. "Practice standing up and speaking, and doing the things that they tried to take away from you."

"Yep," he agreed, hoping that he would be able to continue like this as long as possible before being taken back. "For as long as we can."
